ATHENS. Stricter checks at toll booths for the Easter period. Anyone who tries to travel despite the ban will receive a big fine and have their number plates removed.

Civil Protection & Crisis Management Deputy Minister Nikos Hardalias announced new measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus during the Easter period.

From 18:00 on Wednesday police will be carrying out strict checks at toll booths. The Coastguard will be doing the same at ports and only travel to one's permanent residence will be allowed at airports.

"Traffic police will be carrying out checks of vehicles 24 hours a day at all the country's toll booths and the Coastguard will be doing the same at the ports," said Mr. Hardalias.

He made it quite clear to those who plan to travel during the Easter period, flouting the measures, and warned that there will be a fine of 300 Euros (double that of the normal lockdown fine) and number plates will be removed, leaving them in danger of being stranded in the village.

"It is anti-social and irresponsible. When the lockdown ends at the end of April we can discuss whether it will be lifted - we still have a long road ahead of us," the Deputy Minister said.

"Travelling outside the region of one's residence for recreational reasons is a violation and a fine of 300 Euros will be imposed and number plates removed for 60 days," he stated clearly.

The Deputy Minister also announced that air and sea travel to and from the islands will be suspended due to coronavirus.
