ATHENS. Entry/Exit System (EES) now in effect – What it means for travellers in Corfu.

Non-EU travellers arriving in Corfu may experience longer waiting times at passport control checkpoints due to the gradual implementation of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES). The system replaces manual passport stamping with digital recording and biometric checks, affecting the entry process, particularly during periods of high tourist traffic.

The EES is being implemented at the external borders of 29 European countries and applies to non-EU travellers making short-term visits. In Greece, the deployment and operation of the system falls under the responsibility of the Hellenic Police, while Fraport Greece is cooperating with the relevant authorities to support its implementation at airports.

At present, the process takes place exclusively at passport control checkpoints and includes the collection of biometric data. At the same time, technical tests are ongoing to ensure the system’s proper operation and interoperability, which are expected to be completed in the near future.

According to Fraport Greece, passenger processing times remain longer than usual procedures, especially during peak hours. To address delays, measures have been taken such as enhanced signage, additional support staff, and continuous coordination with the Hellenic Police.

In addition, personnel are available at all stages of the passenger journey within the airport, aiming to facilitate travellers and manage passenger flows, in order to reduce congestion during the transitional phase of the system’s implementation.

Fraport Greece emphasizes that it continues to make efforts to ensure the smooth operation of airports and to reduce passenger inconvenience, during a period of increased arrivals for Greek tourism.
