CORFU. Since 16 March, as part of the measures for coronavirus, there has been a new safe location for blood donation.

The blood donation unit has now temporarily relocated to the Surgical Association, Scaramanga Square (behind Public), made available by the President Maria Mandila-Kousouni, to whom the Hospital Administration is extremely grateful.

Blood can be donated Monday - Friday, 08:30 - 14:00 and 18:00 - 20:00 and on Saturday 09:00 - 14:00. There are also other locations available on Saturday evenings and Sundays depending on the monthly programme.

The Hospital Director said: "From the first day I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a considerable increase in the number of donors. From 16 to 22 March 277 units of blood were collected compared to the last week that blood was collected at the hospital (9 - 15 March) when 95 units were collected.

Data from the Blood Donation Unit shows that there has been an increase of around 200%. Although this is good news, we mustn't relax as there is still a great need for blood.

All the proper safety procedures are followed for blood donation in order to protect both the donors and the nursing and medical staff.

Following are the conclusions and statistics for blood donation:

- Blood available from voluntary donors increased significantly from 40% to 95%. This is in part due to the suspension of regular surgeries (with blood donated by family members) but mainly due to the increased online promotion for voluntary blood donation.
- There has been a significant increase in the number of first-time donors and a decrease in the average age with more and more younger donors.
- Over 50% of donors told us that they were afraid to come to the hospital to donate blood and the relocation of the unit away from the hospital helped encourage them to come and donate."

Hospital Director Leonidas Roubatis would like to give warm thanks to each of the blood donors whose contributions have increased significantly. He would also like to thank the Director and staff at the Blood Donation Unit for all their efforts.

"The voluntary donations from members of the public has been heartwarming and gives us hope. At this difficult time for humanity with the pandemic it is of especial importance not to forget those who need blood. Give blood, give life!"
