IOANNINA. Funding from Epirus Regional Administration will allow Ioannina University Hospital to immediately operate a 2nd Microbiology Lab to test COVID-19 samples - including those from Corfu.

Epirus Regional Administration responded immediately to the request from Ioannina University Hospital Administration and following two decisions taken by the Regional Governor Alexandros Kahrimanis will provide total funding of 223,220 Euros.

In this way, the Regional Administration continues to support the work of the Public Health Services to prevent and deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

133,220 Euros will be provided to obtain absolutely essential medical equipment for a 2nd Infectious Diseases Unit to operate - exclusively for COVID-19 cases - and 90,000 Euros for absolutely essential X-Ray medical equipment for the coronavirus pandemic.

Epirus Regional Governor said: "As I have said previously, Epirus Regional Administration is in the front line to support and reinforce the Public Health Services in this superhuman effort the country is making to restrict and deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The priority is, of course, the hospitals which are receiving the patients and especially Ioannina University Hospital which has been operating very successfully up to now as a designated hospital for the virus.

We have set as our main priority, as opposed to other ongoing obligations, support for the hospital's operation and extension of facilities so that, if necessary, it can be in a position to receive and hospitalise as large a number of patients as possible who may contract the virus.

We are ready to assist, the hospitals and their personnel are in a state of readiness, but what will ensure that the Public Health System can operate properly is rigorous adherence to the guidelines by all members of the public. Stay at home for the next three weeks that the lockdown has been extended for."

As a result, the coronavirus Reporting Centre at the Ioannina University Microbiological Lab will now soon have the ability to examine even more coronavirus samples which are sent from Epirus, Corfu and Lefkada hospitals.

To date, the Lab has been operating with the current personnel, whose credentials include the previous H1N1 virus health crisis, but decisions have already been taken to train more personnel to join the lab.

Microbiologist Konstantina Gardzonika, who is head of the coronavirus Reporting Centre, talked about the great challenge being faced by the global medical community with the deadly virus. She also spoke about the way the Reporting Centre operates - trying to provide certain and authoritative results for the samples in as short a time as possible.

"The minimum amount of time needed to test a sample is 4 hours," said Katerina Gardzonika, "and we are getting to the point where we have to examine 60 - 70 samples a day. With the extra personnel we are expecting in the next few days we will be able to conduct many more sample tests."
