ATHENS. China has sent 8 tons of hygiene items to Athens including 550,000 medical, surgical and protective face masks, medical safety glasses, gloves and overshoes.
An Air China aeroplane arrived at Athens airport just after 08:00 this morning with aid from China to Greece in the form of hygiene items to help the country's emergency needs to fight coronavirus.
According to the Chinese Embassy, there were 8 tons of hygiene items including 550,000 medical, surgical and protective face masks, medical safety glasses, gloves and overshoes.
The materials were handed over by the Chinese Ambassador to Greece Zhang Qiyue to the Ministers of State, Giorgos Gerapetritis and Health, Vassilis Kikilias; Deputy Foreign Minister, Militiadis Varvitsiotis and the Foreign Office Economic Relations and Openness General Secretary Grigoris Dimitriadis. According to the same information sources, the plane also contained another 10 tons of medical items donated by Chinese businesses and organisations.
The Health Minister expressed the country's gratitude to the Chinese Government and the others who had contributed: "At a time when there is a global shortage of these items and with the Ministry of Health's huge efforts to acquire them, today's donations provide great relief and we will continue to fight to equip our hospitals," Vassilis Kikilias told ERT TV.
Mr. Varvitsiotis spoke along the same lines: "It is of great significance that we have the kind of relationship with China that we do and we have been given the aid that we need." He said that this aid provides great relief, especially to the health services personnel in the country, with sufficient items of personal protection for a good period of time. He went on to say that, unfortunately, we produce very few hygiene items which are enough to cover all our needs. The Government's efforts to obtain personal protection items will not stop with this planeload.
The Chinese Ambassador said that solidarity and cooperation will help us overcome the challenge we are facing. Zhang Qiyue stressed that China and Greece are working together in this fight against coronavirus, demonstrating yet again the excellent relations and friendship between the two peoples.
