CORFU. The school bell rang at Erikoussa Primary School this morning signalling the - delayed - start of the school year.

The school at the most northwestern point of Greece has reopened after three years. Just as with all the isolated islands, it suffers from a lack of basic services - such as a doctor - and, of course, there are only a handful of children as their families are forced to leave for practical reasons.

Erikoussa Primary School closed in 2017 due to a lack of pupils. Today, with the placement of a teacher, the school was able to operate once again - even though there are only two children. There is one 1st grade girl and one 3rd grade boy.

The school year began with the traditional holy blessing in the presence of the Director of Primary Education Christos Anthis, who reached the island by private means, along with a few island residents.
