CORFU. The deadline for Municipalities to receive funding of 300,000 Euros for animal shelters from the Ministry of the Interior ΄Philodimos΄ programme is 31 December.

The local authorities are hurrying to receive funding for the creation of shelters for stray animals before the deadline. The funding of 300,000 Euros from the 'Philodimos' programme, to set up animal shelters for the care of strays, has been available since June and the deadline is on 31 December.

The treatment of animals with respect is the mark of a civilised society. It has been said many times that a system needs to be set up in Corfu to properly care for stray animals - both in the town and around the island.

A meeting has been arranged for Wednesday 20 November with the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor for Culture Chrysoula Tombrou and the two responsible Deputy Mayors from the North and South Corfu Municipalities. The basic principles and details of the inter-municipality project will be discussed in order to take advantage of the 'Philodimos' funding for the benefit of all three Corfu Municipal communities.

All three want to settle any outstanding issues so that the documentation to be submitted can be completed as fast as possible ahead of the fast-approaching deadline - enabling Corfu to receive the funding of 300,000 Euros from the Interior Ministry 'Philodimos' programme.

All are agreed on the need for an animal shelter to cover the needs of the town and the north and south of the island. Stray animals will receive proper care and medical treatment for a short time and then registered before being released with a special identity collar.

The Municipality of Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands is looking at the idea of having 'adoption days' when members of the public can come and adopt a stray animal and give it a home with love and care.
