CORFU. Monday 11 November, 14:30 - 15:30, Upper Square - Observation of the rare astronomical phenomenon of Mercury passing in front of the Sun.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality and the Mobile Digital Planetarium are organising an observation by telescope of Mercury passing in front of the Sun. The observation is taking place in the Upper Square on Monday 11 November from 14:30 to 15:30.

Observers will be able to watch the smallest planet in our solar system Mercury moving in front of the Sun - a comparatively rare phenomenon which occurs approximately 13 times a century.

With suitable equipment the small planet Mercury will be visible as a tiny black dot slowly moving across in front of the Sun. Observing this as it happens will give you a living experience of how huge the Sun is compared to the planets and you will gain an idea of the size of our solar system.

It is extremely dangerous to look at the sun without suitable equipment - the eyes can suffer serious damage, even permanent blindness. Monday's observation, if there is sunshine, will be using the Mobile Digital Planetarium - Planetarium on the Go telescope with proper filters.

The next time Mercury will pass in front of the Sun will be in 2032.
