CORFU. Hospital Director Kakavitsas: Ultimate act of humanity ICU Director: Expression of human compassion
Hospital Director Phivos Kakavitsas announced that the transportation was completed in the early hours of the morning of the organs from the 28-year-old donor who had been hospitalised in the hospital ICU over the last few days - the third such operation in the last two years.
Special medical teams came to the hospital from Athens, Thessaloniki and Italy. The heart went to a recipient in Bergamo, Italy, the lungs to Bologna, Italy, the liver to Thessaloniki and the kidneys to Athens and Ioannina.
The family of the deceased obviously deserve a huge bravo for their decision along with our deepest condolences - it is an ultimate act of humanity which, as well as giving hope to the specific recipients, shows that even in a time of great sadness hope can come for many of our fellow-humans who have been on lists for a long time waiting for compatible donors.
We have attached a press release from the Director of the Intensive Care Unit Dr. Farmakis, who organised and coordinated the whole procedure on behalf of the hospital - highlighting once more the important role played by the ICU in such serious cases and in the highly sensitive matter of organ donation.
We would like to take the opportunity to mention once again that another bed was added to the Unit two years ago - taking the total up to 5. The decision taken a few months ago, however, not to renew the contracts of 3 nursing staff puts the operation of the Unit at risk and makes the work of the hospital more difficult.

Once again human compassion has been expressed - this time by the family of the 28-year-old MD with their decision to donate his organs to unknown recipients regardless of sex, nationality, religion or any other differences.
The procedure of transporting the organs to the recipients was completed on 25 October.
On behalf of the ICU personnel I would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. I would also like to thank all those involved in the process of removing, transporting and transplanting the valuable organs.
Finally, I wish all the recipients of the organs a speedy recovery.
The hospital ICU in 2018 had a high survival rate of 70%. We work hard to help those suffering from serious conditions and believe that organ donation is the greatest gift that can be given and shows once again that life can win. For this reason we will continue our efforts to raise public awareness that organ donation is the only weapon to provide hope and recovery of health.
