CORFU. "We are willing to help the refugees in any other way such as with clothing, food, medicines and anything else needed."

The Association of Corfu Travel Agents (AOCTA) has stated its position regarding the plan to accommodate refugees and immigrants. In its statement it says that the people in Corfu have demonstrated their humanitarian feelings towards all our fellow humans but at the present time it is facing serious problems with infrastructure and a tourist crisis.

AOCTA Statement

With regard to the recent discussion regarding the need for other parts of the country to accommodate refugees and immigrants apart from the Eastern Aegean islands, which have suffered the main burden of putting up refugees, we would like to make known AOCTA's position on the matter.

Whenever there has been a need Corfu and its people have always demonstrated their humanitarianism towards fellow humans regardless of country, religion and colour. There are many examples not only in the distant past but also more recently when the border with Albania was opened in 1990 and 2000 and with the aid given to the Serbian people in the war.

At the present time, however, the island is facing serious problems with infrastructure and a tourist crisis due to the bankruptcy of the Thomas Cook company, which had a critical financial impact on the local economy and it is impossible for Corfu to accommodate refugees and immigrants.

We are willing to help the refugees in any other way such as with clothing, food, medicines and anything else that is needed.
