Fire breaks out on passenger ship in Igoumenitsa

IGOUMENITSA. Fire broke out in the garage of a passenger ship in Igoumenitsa.

According to initial information, the fire broke out in two lorries in the fourth garage of the ANEK Lines ship Olympic Champion.

The ship had departed for Venice and had to return and dock in the port. There were 538 passengers on board along with 293 vehicles and 75 crew members according to ABE-BE. All the passengers disembarked.

Disembarkation started at 08:20 and was completed without any problems. Most of the crew also disembarked and two people with breathing problems were taken to Igoumenitsa Health Centre.

According to the Coastguard, the situation is under control. Two Coastguard vessels rushed to the scene along with a tugboat and fire engines from Igoumenitsa as well as from neighbouring Preveza, Arta and Ioannina.

The Olympic Champion was built in 2000 - its length is 204 metres and width 26.13 metres.
