ATHENS. On Wednesday 4,500 Germans were added to the 2,800 Britons on the list of those stranded in Corfu following the collapse of Thomas Cook and its German subsidiary. What businesses are requesting from the Government.
Their accommodation and repatriation is being covered by the insurance companies.
Reliable sources in the Greek travel agency sector are saying that the short timelapse between the British and the German collapse gave the German market time to plan and heal some of the wounds caused by the collapse.
What still needs to be settled are the losses for the Greek and Corfu hotels. Until the British courts decide on the settlements, businesses are demanding from the Greek State that they can be exempted from paying taxes on income they did not receive and from paying VAT for amounts that had been invoiced but not received.
It is expected that other tour operators will replace those no longer in the market and it will be 'business as usual' - and there will be a lot of care and tension in drawing up new contracts.
