CORFU. One of the main priorities will be policing parking spaces and facilitating the smooth flow of traffic and pedestrians.

Police will begin implementing a special action plan in the coming days which aims to make the daily routine easier for the public in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada.

The plan, which has been named "Free movement of citizens in towns", was drawn up by the Ionian Islands Regional Police Headquarters based on general guidelines from the Hellenic Police Headquarters and aims to improve the quality of life in urban and peri-urban areas on the islands, to ensure the safe and seamless movement of citizens, especially vulnerable groups, and improve road safety.

The main priorities will be policing special needs parking spaces, pedestrian areas and pedestrian crossings, driving in illegal areas and parking on pavements and in general facilitating ease of movement for the public.

The plan will also target unlawful conduct whilst driving which causes a nuisance or pollution for residents or danger to other road users.

Key pillars of the plan:

- Ongoing targetted public information
- Collaboration with regional and local authorities - whose advice has already been taken into account in the drawing up of the plan
- Regular patrolling by the traffic police

The plan will be implemented by the Police Departments in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia and Lefkada and the results will be evaluated and published at regular intervals.
