LEFKIMMI. At the end of his speech the new South Corfu Mayor Kostas Lessis invited all the party leaders to come up and speak.

With this symbolic gesture he wanted to show that cross-party cooperation is his main priority. He also stressed that he will be sticking to his election promises. Looking at Meropi Ydraiou he said, "The South landfill will not go into operation. I said it before the election and I'm going to stick to my promise despite what some people think." He said that he was taking over a Municipality with many shortcomings and deficiencies in all its infrastructure which means it will be like starting from scratch.

There was a celebratory atmosphere at this, the first of the Municipal swearing-ins. Nearly everyone was present, apart from the new Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa - the three MPs, the other two mayors and a large number of officials and representatives filled the hall in Alykes. There was a large buffet outside and an air of optimism and hope. The hard work begins in a week!
