Cleansing Service tells businesses to "Observe the rules in Spianada"

CORFU. Corfu Municipal Cleansing Service has issued a statement regarding the depositing and collection of refuse in Spianada.
Statement from Municipal Cleansing Service:
"In response to the complaints from some shopkeepers in the Old Town regarding irregular refuse collection, we would like to point out that they have been informed of the following:
- Refuse in the town is collected at night - after 02:00 every day. Businesses are obliged to adapt to this timetable, to have sufficient storage space and not to dump rubbish in or outside bins during the day - especially in summer.
- Mixed waste from businesses must be properly sealed in bags and taken by trolley to the bins.
- In the area of Spianada there has been a press container to collect recyclable materials operating for the last two years in order not to have blue bins in the Square.
Due to the fact, however, that a large proportion of businesses are not observing the rules, with large amounts of rubbish being dumped throughout the day and paving stones covered in grease from the rubbish bags being dragged across them, the Municipality will be taking the following measures:
- Small, open trucks will also collect refuse from Spianada twice a day - from 06:00 to 12:00 and 21:00 to 23:00.
- Recyclable materials will be collected from businesses and residents of the Old Town from 10:00 to 12:00.
- Kitchen waste will be collected from businesses in the Old Town every day after 23:00.
We would like to point out that on many occasions access to refuse bins is obstructed by parked cars, thus prohibiting the collection of the refuse. Refuse collectors are also forced to load tons of refuse onto the trucks by hand.
To solve the problem and eliminate the awful sight of scattered and open disposal bags from the restaurants we would like to inform the public and businesses of the following:
- The green and blue bins will be removed immediately from Pentofanaro to prevent illegal parking and facilitate refuse collection from the underground bins. The area will be cleaned and disinfected.
- The public has priority for the use of the underground bins.
To help the town maintain a decent appearance, businesses have the following obligations:
- To make full use of the service provided by the Municipality with small vehicles going door-to-door.
- To package recyclable materials and take them to the press containers in the Square.
- To seal mixed waste well in bags and take them by trolley to the underground bins after 00:00 - to minimise any stench around the Pentofanaro and opposite the Palace.
We would like to once again ask everyone, especially businesses, to observe the abovementioned rules and guidelines - first of all, because it is their duty and secondly, it is against their own interests not to do so."
