CORFU. The incoming Mayor has requested that the procedure for contracting out refuse collection be put on fast-track.
With the island once again facing a serious problem with rubbish piling up on the roads and the invitation for tenders for refuse collection not progressing, the incoming Mayor of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Meropi Ydraiou took the initiative of requesting the Minister of the Interior Mr. Theodorikakos to ask the Hellenic Single Public Procurement Authority to exceptionally approve the availability of required funds in order to proceed towards the awarding and signing of the contract on a fast-track basis.
According to the press release from Ms Ydraiou, she wrote to Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos asking him to submit the request due to the urgency of the situation on the island.
Ms Ydraiou also submitted the request to the Minister of the Interior, whom she also updated on the dead end in which the island finds itself due to the lack of progress in awarding the contract for refuse collection and the inability of the Municipality to carry it out.
Ms Ydraiou pointed out, "The emergency situation demands emergency solutions. The proposal I put forward is realistic and no time must be lost. The procedure to award the contract for refuse collection must be put on fast-track until the contract is awarded and signed. The Ministry of the Interior supports this and the Municipality must immediately submit a request to the Hellenic Single Public Procurement Authority."
