CORFU. Letter sent by Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners, Corfu Hoteliers΄ Association, Trade Association and Corfu Tourist Guides΄ Union.

The letter was sent to the Minister for the Interior Panayiotis Theodorikakos and copied to the Minister for Tourism Haris Theoharis and Corfu MPs Stefanos Gikas, Alekos Avlinitis and Dimitris Biagis. The signatories wished once more to make clear the urgent need for a solution to the island's waste problem.

The letter states: "We would firstly like to let you know of the huge waste management problem being faced by Corfu, one of the most significant tourist destinations in the country - bringing huge funds into the state coffers. Secondly, we wish to request your immediate help in solving this problem.

Yet again the island is full of piles of rubbish creating both a public health risk for residents and visitors and a negative image of the tourist destination. It is no exaggeration to say that 'Corfu is dying' and we need your immediate intervention. There is an urgent need for the request that waste be removed from the island forthwith to be granted. This request has been made on numerous occasions by several organisations and authorities but has never been accepted.

Corfu cannot wait for the new Integrated Waste Management facility to be constructed without something being done about the problem we have now as the local economy, which is based on tourism, is threatened with complete destruction.

Taking the above into account, we look forward to your immediate response so that steps can be taken to solve the huge problem threatening our island."
