Corfu Mountain Trail 2019: Races with an international reputation

CORFU. For the 8th year running Corfu will be hosting the event which is a favourite with Greek and international runners.

The Corfu Mountain Trail takes place this weekend, 4 and 5 May, with four routes, the main one of which is 110km.

The routes cover 10km, 20km, 40km and 110km and hundreds of runners are expected in Corfu this weekend from Greece and abroad. The international runners include Marco Olmo, who is two-times winner of the International UTMB mountain race and has been finisher marathon de subles several times and world champion Gediminas Grinius who will be running in a race in Greece for the first time.

The races will follow country and forest paths and roads in the districts of Thinalia, Phaeaces, Parelia, Achilleio, Melitia - mostly in Spartilla, Perithia, Petalia, Episkepsi, Klimatia, Alimatades, Lakones, Yiannades, Vato, Varipatades, Kastelanos, Ag. Deka, Stavros, Strongili, Moraitika and Nymphes and Kinopiastes.

The four races are 10km (Quick Trail), 20km (Olive Tree Trail), 40km (Rain Trail) and the 110km Corfu Mountain Trail Ultra. The corresponding times for the races to be completed are 3, 5, 10 and 28 hours.

The Corfu Mountain Trail Ultra run starts from Ipsos village, climbs to the highest point of the island Mt. Pantokrator (914m) and then passes through traditional villages in the north of the island. From there it goes along the west coast close to the beaches of Liapades, Myrtiotissa, Glyfada and Kontogialou along trails with stunning views of the Adriatic before climbing up to the mountain village of Agii Deka where it joins the 40km run at the 20km mark and end in Messonghi village.

The Ultra race has an extra 6km this year, Sinies-Krinia and Kinopiastes, so that participants can get 5 points, according to the International Federation (ITRA) regulation, towards the 2019 world championship.
