First Resurrection and the pots in Corfu

Easter
27 Apr 2019 / 10:12

CORFU. Throwing out the bad! 11:00 exactly - the First Resurrection in Corfu. Bells ring joyfully and pots (botides) full of water are thrown from windows and balconies.

The balconies have been decorated and red ribbons have been tied to the 'botides' (pots). There is friendly competitiveness - who will throw the biggest pot and which one will male the loudest noise? There is cheering, celebration and enthusiasm all coming together to create the unique atmosphere of the Corfu Easter!

The best-known of the island's traditions has its roots in the period of Venetian rule although there are various theories as to how it began.

Some say the tradition originated with the Venetian Catholics who, at the beginning of the year, threw out their old possessions so that the new year could bring them new and better things. Others say it goes back to the time of the Ancient Greeks who celebrated the coming of spring by throwing out their old pots so that they could fill new pots with new fruit. Many Corfiots believe that they are exorcising the bad by throwing out the pots - ending the winter lethargy and welcoming Nature's renaissance.

When the noise from the botides has subsided the bands take to the streets in colourful rivers amongst the crowds of people. They now play the celebratory march 'Fear Not, Greeks' and the percussion sections play their hearts out with new surprises every year!
