CORFU. If there is something that has come from this saga with the rubbish, apart from the obvious concern about its consequences, it is the increased awareness amongst community organizations.

Apart from the health aspects of the problem, tourism professionals are the first to face the economic consequences before they hit the rest of the local community - both private and public sector. So, whilst continuing to look into ways of reversing the negative image that was created, hoteliers and tourist accommodation owners are turning to the essence of the matter. Messrs Voulgaris and Katsaros from the Hoteliers' Association and the Federation of Tourist Accommodation Owners emphatically stressed that "We aren't part of the problem, we're part of the solution!"

The two organizations held a seminar at a central hotel about waste management, taking on their share of responsibility as 'large-scale producers'.

With the assistance of Mr. Aravosi from Athens Metsovio Technical University, other experts and representatives of companies dealing in bio-waste collection systems, they aim to reduce as much as possible the amount of waste going to the landfills.

To achieve this goal they aim to follow, apart from common sense, the European guidelines and the targets outlined in the national plan, which are, unfortunately, still at desperately low levels. To rub it in, so to speak, one of the speakers talke about Germany, where the last landfill in the country closed this year. However, Germany seems to be the example that we want to avoid following...up to now, at any rate.
