CORFU. Residents were worried by talk of a shark.

A post on Facebook was enough to spark off rumours of a shark swimming off the coast of the island - the case of Wanda Pierri, who lost her life in the sea off Mon Repos in 1951, still hasn't been forgotten by the local community.

The Facebook post shows a long-range shot of what looks like a fin. We were informed by the authorities that a coast guard vessel went to investigate but didn't find any sign of a shark.

Nevertheless, for safety reasons the Port Authority issued a statement calling for bathers and harpoonists to take care.

Corfu Port Authority Statement

"In response to comments from some members of the public, Corfu Port Authority would like to point out that there is possibly a dogfish off the coast of the island and specifically in the areas Faliraki, Bania t-Alekou, Anemomylos and Mon Repos."
