CORFU. The new Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Services Spyros Kaloudis told the protestors that the rubbish tips will be cleared up within 10 days and normal refuse collection will resume.
Acharavi residents came out to protest and to meet with Mr. Kaloudis with the huge piles of rubbish in the background - which stretch between Sidari and Kassiopi. Not only will the clearing of the rubbish tips be a huge task but so will the resumption of normal refuse collection.
The reason for this, which came out in the discussion with the Deputy Mayor, is that during the refuse crisis approximately 400 refuse bins have disappeared from the north of the island!
As if that wasn't enough, the Deputy Mayor said that the remaining available bins for the whole of the island number approximately 300 blue and 200 green! The answer to the riddle 'What happened to the bins?' is thought to be that some were taken by individuals to be used in nearby areas so as to avoid attracting piles of rubbish, others are probably buried under the rubbish piles and others vandalised.
