CORFU. Residents and tourists in Moraitika in despair – Why refuse collection is delayed and when a solution is expected.

Six days after the emergency announcement by the Municipality of South Corfu (8 September) regarding the temporary suspension of waste collection, the situation in the area remains dire. Today, Monday 14 September, the roads of Moraitika — particularly those behind the main road, but also in other areas, just a stone’s throw from homes and tourist businesses — are inundated with mountains of rubbish, causing a severe stench and posing serious risks to public health.

According to information received by Enimerosi, the root of the problem lies in the expiry of the relevant contract on 31 August. The delay in waste collection is due to the bureaucratic and approval procedures required to change the final destination of the waste, as some waste is now being transported from Palairos to Kozani and then back to Palairos.

There is an expectation and hope that the necessary procedures will be completed within the next few days, allowing waste collection to resume and the situation to be gradually brought back under control by the end of the week.
