Pirate ship in Corfu!

Corfu Port

CORFU. The replica 18th century brig docked in Corfu drawing the attention of visitors and residents!

Like a picture from an old book, a legendary tale or some American blockbuster...a pirate ship in Corfu!

The hull with its three masts, the old worn ropes, the small cannons and the mermaid figurehead. The crew and the captain with his dreadful beard and feathered hat and decorations.

They tied up at Corfu Old Port on Saturday, disembarked, sang and played drums for whoever was passing by and then got back on board.

It was the 'La Grace', launched in Athens in 2011 by Miss Czech Republic Lucie Křížková who, it is said, requested Poseidon's goodwill! The 23m pirate ship is an authentic replica of a brig belonging to Augustine Herman who, with a mainly Czech crew, travelled around Europe, United States, Caribbean and across the Atlantic Ocean in the 18th century on merchant and exploratory journeys.

The construction of the replica was completed in 2010 in a Suez shipyard from Scandinavian wood (apart from the keel and the frames, which are made of extremely hard and sturdy camphor wood and mulberry wood) based on blueprints published in 1768 by Swedish Admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman - credited as the first naval architect who laid the foundations of the modern shipbuilding.

Boat’s engine, electric generator, water and power distribution were installed and there was plenty of accommodation space. With Captain Josef Dvorský, constructor Daniel Rosecký (now co-owners) and boatswain Viktor Neuman the ship sails the seas of the world (especially the Mediterranean) taking part in races and putting on unque performances for tourists.
