CORFU. 19 - 21 October at the Ionian Academy.
This weekend Corfu Municipality and the Ionian University, assisted by all the bodies on the island involved in tourism, are organizing the Corfu Tourism Conference ΄Corfu Tourism αειForum΄ for the second year running.
Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands were amongst the first places in the Mediterranean to have organized tourism. They have kept their natural beauty and have a rich cultural heritage but their infrastructure has been undermined by the demanding and ever-increasing wave of tourism and they realise that other Mediterranean destinations are experiencing the same effects. The Ionian University has now established an innovative Tourism Studies Department, which will commence in the academic year 2019-20, in response to the new order in the field of tourism.
Conference Sessions
The conference is taking place at the Ionian Academy and will include four conference sessions and three workshops.
On Saturday 20 October at 10:00 the conference will open in the Academy Auditorium with the significant topic of the economy of sharing and its effects on the economy and local social cohesion.
Following this session there will be a workshop organized by Corfuland for tourism professionals in the Senate Hall.
On Saturday evening the burning issue of the capacity for tourism in Corfu and the Mediterranean will be discussed. This will be followed by a second workshop for hoteliers and accommodation owners organized by the company m-hospitality.
The final discussion topic on Saturday will be making full use of cultural heritage in tourism, with examples from the Mediterranean region. The day's programme will be completed by a third workshop on Cruise Management with Eva Stefanidaki.
On Sunday morning at 11:00 the session will focus on the development of technology and its effects on tourism - a highly significant area which forms an important part of the 4th industrial revolution.
The sessions will be completed on Sunday afternoon with a discussion on the criteria for and future of large investments in Corfu.
