CORFU. Following the concern expressed at this year΄s ABTA conference about refuse management the Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Athens James Bryce was sent to Corfu.

According to the letter he sent to the Mayor to request a meeting, the sole matter of concern and reason for the meeting was the issue with the refuse - prompted by the volume of complaints expressed in every possible way about the island's image this year.

The Mayor gave the British diplomat a detailed update on the current situation and what caused it. He assured him that a plan was being put into action to resolve the situation once and for all and that come the new year things will have improved and the extreme conditions witnessed this year will not exist during the 2019 tourist season.

They also discussed Britain's upcoming exit from the EU in March and possible consequences for the British nationals living in Corfu and the tourism and transport industries.

The Deputy Head of Mission James Bryce was accompanied at the meeting by the British Vice-Consul in Corfu Charlie Picoula.

Mr. Bryce thanked the Mayor for the Municipality's help in issues involving British tourists (500,000 this year) and residents (10,000) in Corfu and the assistance provided for the filming of The Durrells.
