Until we learn the final economic results of this year΄s tourist season all we have is the impression created by the number of arrivals. In this respect we had a record year and the same is foreseen for the coming years.

It is clear that better organization is required in order that the new information can be consolidated in the economy. This is what led to the Corfu Tourism Conference - αειforum, which this year will be held 19 - 21 October.

Objectively, at the heart of these types of effort are the two main Corfu institutions. The necessary unity and cooperation can be established by the Municipality and the University cooperating with all the bodies involved. The conference fulfils an ongoing need. The strategic aim is to develop cooperation amongst the Corfu bodies and organizations according to needs, prospects and ambitions. Collaboration between public bodies and those in the private sector is an absolute reality in the economy of the global market.

Corfu is the flagship of Greek tourism. This means it often has to face novel problems and new factors, experiences and threats. It is clear that it has to measure and evaluate all of these. It must promote pilot schemes, produce innovative ideas, open up new roads and push for appropriate legislation when it comes up against 'old-fashioned' regulations, bureaucracy and ulterior motives.

Corfu has the right to think like this and to act accordingly!

Following a record year and in all likelihood with another ahead of us it is clear and obvious that all the bodies involved must act together.

In this situation the involvement of work representatives is not a compromise but a recognition of their value, their experience and their creativity. Discussion does not take place in order to cover up or even to bridge the differences. This is the basic challenge for any kind of creativity. Acceptance of democratic principles and demonstration of the appropriate moral stance are the prerequisites for both the organization of the discussion and the resulting actions.
