CORFU. There were no injuries during Tuesday night΄s incidents during the protest in Lefkimmi.

It was yet another protest against the use of the landfill - protests that have been going on since the beginning of the summer when the riot police (MAT) came to the island.

The incidents began early in the evening when a lorry with tar for the landfill access road was blocked by some protestors, against whom the driver has pressed charges for sabotage. Residents, however, told the newspaper protothema.gr that the lorry was carrying mixed waste.

The residents' protest meeting last night turned into a battlefield where, according to the police, a large number of molotovs were thrown by protestors at the riot police who responded by firing flashbangs and chemicals.

At midnight the area around the Regional Building and near the landfill was like a scene out of hell with fires burning all over the place in bins and in fields with olive trees, which were extinguished by firefighters.

It is estimated that about 20 olive trees and two stremma of land were burnt. The police detained five people, who were later released and no arrests were made.
