Yiannis to have a second operation

hit and run
21 Sep 2018 / 06:11

CORFU. He had the first operation for a compound hip fracture (plus a more minor one in the knee). The police are still seeking the hit and run driver with a ΄white car΄.

Real concern and best wishes. Lots of best wishes. For a full recovery and quick return to his home. The local community was shocked to hear about the serious injuries that 'Corfu Yiannis' suffered when he was hit by a car. There was also anger at the driver who abandoned him without help. He is one of Corfu's best-liked 'characters'.

His condition is quite serious. He has a compound hip fracture on the one leg and a more minor fracture of the knee on the other.

As first reported in Enimerosi, the incident happened in the early hours of last Thursday (13/9) on Alexandras Ave - where he would often hang out - outside OTE. According to police sources (and many wonder why it took so long for an official announcement to come from the police), it happened between 06:00 and 06:30. The identity of the driver of the white car is not known and he/she is still being sought by the police.

Yiannis was immediately taken to Corfu Hospital, where it was deemed necessary to transfer him to the KAT Hospital in Athens to be operated on.

He had an operation on the hip on Tuesday. According to family sources, the doctors said: "We've never seen a compound fracture like this before!"

The operation (carried out by Dr. Giorgos Kountis) went well considering the seriousness of a compound hip fracture. The initial post-operation stage also went well. His condition is being monitored daily in order to decide when he will have the second operation on the knee injury - it is thought that 3-4 days will have to have passed. This time the Director of the 4th Orthopaedic Clinic at KAT Dr. Giorgos Maheras will operate.

At the moment it still can't be said when he will be discharged. However, for a full recovery it will need several months of hard work and most probably he will have to remain in Athens for the best possible therapy.

His brother Dionysis has been at his side the whole time. He told Enimerosi: "Despite his distress, he is psychologically quite well." He expressed his thanks to everyone in Corfu for their concern and the good wishes they sent once it became known what had happened. He also wants the police to find the driver.
