CORFU. The unstable subsoil had subsided so much that the small bridge on the road bend in Vatonies, North West Corfu was almost hanging in the air.

The ground had been subsiding for years. There had been no road maintenance and the final straw came last winter with the heavy downpours. The unstable subsoil subsided so much that the small bridge on the road bend  was left almost hanging in the air. Heavy vehicles stopped using the road as did the school buses of course. When the Regional Administration started to contract out the work, the 350,000 Euros available for the whole (!) of North Corfu was just enough to patch up the worst parts of the road network.

Local residents waited for the contractor who never came and eventually called the bridge 'Mavroyalouros Bridge' after the character in a classic Greek comedy - a politician who made promise after promise but did nothing.

The tourist season is coming to an end and the bridge remained in that condition all summer.

Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Nikoletta Pandi told Enimerosi that the work on the bridge support required a study to be done, which was given to an outside company.

The photo below shows the preliminary work that has just started today. The question is whether the work can be completed before the rains start - otherwise if it is delayed yet again we'll be calling it the Arta Bridge.
