CORFU. On Saturday 11 August at 09:00 there will be a procession in remembrance of the miracle of St. Spyridon, in which he saved the island from the Ottoman Turks.
Corfu Town had been under siege from the Turks for 40 days, when cataclysmic storms began - which were attributed to St. Spyridon. The Ottoman forces withdrew and never returned.
Corfu became the bastion for the whole of Europe and General Schulenburg, who had been head of the defending army, was honoured by the Venetian Senate. On 19 March, 1717 the Senate voted that there should be an annual procession with St. Spyridon's tabernacle on 11 August.
The procession will follow the route:
Church of St. Spyridon - Start
Philharmonic Society
Mich. Theotoki
Evg. Voulgareos
Capodistriou St
Agon. Polytechniou
Palace of St. Michael & St. George
Eleftherias St. (Liston)
Nik. Theotoki
St. Spyridon Square (Plakada tou Agiou) - End
The August procession is one of four processions with St. Spyridon every year in Corfu and will be accompanied by the Philharmonic Bands.
