LEFKIMMI. Lefkimmi residents stressed that their demonstration - in which they will attempt to march to the landfill - will be peaceful.
There will be another protest demonstration in Lefkimmi tonight Sunday which will gather at the Neohoraki football pitch at 8pm. Following Saturday's demonstration which proceeded from Lefkimmi village to the regional road, the Movement decided to set off from Neohoraki on Sunday and proceed peacefully towards the landfill access road to see how the situation has developed there.
The protest organizers said that they have submitted a request to Lefkimmi police for the riot police to be withdrawn from the regional road as their presence is detrimental to tourism and residents' daily life. The request was also repeated verbally to the police chief during yesterday's demonstration.
Some protestors attempted to break through the police blockade and get past the vans where all the riot police were gathered but not even a 'mosquito' was allowed to pass.
The organizers said that they will wait for a couple of days to receive a response to their request for the regional road to open up and the presence of the police to be limited to just the landfill access road.
