LEFKIMMI. The demonstration will gather at 20:00 in Riglades, Agion Panton Square and then proceed towards the Regional Building at the port crossroads.
Call to Action
The Lefkimmi Movement, which is against the operation of the illegal landfill, calls on all Lefkimmi and Corfu residents to attend another protest rally on Saturday 14th July at 20:00. The meeting point will be Riglades, Agion Panton Square and from there we will march all together through the village, calling on all residents to join us, to the Regional Building at the port crossroads.
When we get there we will ask the police officer on duty to immediately open up the road which has been closed off for about 20 days by the occupying forces - destroying the morale of the local residents and causing economic damage to the area as the road leads to the tourist area of Kavos and Lefkimmi port.
Traffic is being diverted to an adjacent country road. We believe that the police will have opened up the road before the demonstration reaches the crossroads and that it will remain open.
As a community, we cannot understand why the police are keeping this section of the regional road closed 24 hours a day as the transportation of the waste bales takes place at specific times. The landfill is located at quite a distance from the regional road and so there is no justification for its closure.

Sunday's violence
In a press release the Lefkimmi Movement states: "The Lefkimmi Movement against the operation of the landfill and the Lefkimmi Cultural and Environmental Society once again condemn any acts of violence, whoever they may be committed by, and especially when they put human lives in danger.
The Society and the Movement successfully supervised the large protest rally and ensured that it remained peaceful. This is also recognized by the police who came face to face with the rally organizers. Whatever violence there was occurred after the rally had ended.
Lefkimmi Cultural and Environmental Society and the Lefkimmi Movement are organizing another protest rally and we will be supervising it to ensure that it remains peaceful. Our objective is to ask the police and the authorities to re-examine the matter of the closure of the Lefkimmi regional road and the presence of the riot police - which benefit noone and are destroying the morale and economy of local residents. The presence of the riot police is a provocation for Lefkimmi residents which engenders reactions which we as a Movement are not able to control."
