Photography Exhibition: ΄Chisels and Memories (Smili kai Mnimi) - The contribution of marblework to the restoration of monuments΄

CORFU. The Committee for the Conservation of the Acropolis Monuments (ESMA), Acropolis Restoration Service (YSMA) and the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage are celebrating the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 with a photography exhibition - ΄Smili and Mnimi΄ (Chisels and Memories).
The exhibition 'Chisels and Memories - The contribution of marblework to the restoration of monuments' is touring Greece and, following an invitation from Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities, the first stop is the Latin Chapel in Corfu Old Fortress.
The exhibition, which opens on Friday 6th July at 20:00 and runs until 30th July, will display archive material from the restoration work on the Acropolis monuments, focussing on the human contribution to the work.
The exhibition attempts to answer a series of questions: what do the marble technicians contribute to the restoration work and to what extent? What are the feelings of those who are participating in the work? How does the community of marble technicians function - collaboration, exchange of knowledge and experiences and training?
The exhibition also aims to show that marblework is an intangible cultural product and to show not only the work of the technicians but also the traditions, cultural experiences and collective relationships and memories within which this art has been handed down from generation to generation over the centuries.

Co-organized with the Piraeus Cultural Foundation which will take the exhibition to Thessaloniki in autumn 2018 and to Tinos in spring 2019.
