CORFU. Petition requesting the Municipality for help in finding premises for the sterilisation of stray animals.

A volunteer group made up of British residents and Greeks, has taken the significant initiative of collecting signatures to tackle the problem of the increasing population of stray animals, which has got out of control.

It is well known that in Corfu there is a large number of stray animals which are suffering, and being mistreated or even thrown into rubbish bins! The countless incidents published on social media show that a large section of the public do not yet understand that sterilisation is a humane practice.

There are already an incredible 65,000 signatures to the petition – Greeks and foreign residents and visitors – requesting the Municipality’s help in finding premises in Corfu for the sterilisation of stray animals by volunteer vets.

The volunteers have been working on this project for some time now in collaboration with vets and the animal welfare group The Corfu Ark.

Sue Done, an active member of the group, told Enimerosi: “We know that the Municipality is concerned about this issue and has done a lot of work, but it is a huge problem and there is no quick solution. We also know it may
take time due to bureaucratic procedures but we believe that with the persistence and commitment of our volunteers we will be able to achieve our goal. Once suitable premises have been found, fundraising will begin to equip them in order for them to be licenced.”

The petition with the signatures was delivered to the Mayor’s office (Ref. No. 28035) as well as to other councillors and organizations.

'Please Help the Corfu Strays, Provide Licensed Veterinary premises for sterilisation projects'

To: The Mayor of Corfu Konstantinos Nikolouzos

We urgently need Licensed Veterinary premises - the stray animal population is out of control – with daily posts on Social media highlighting new cases of abandoned dogs, puppies, cats & kittens. Not only are the animals suffering but so is the image of Corfu to the world and this is turn affects tourism.

A large-scale spay & neuter program, along with education, is the only way to control the stray animal population in Corfu. This is the most humane way to help the animals.

We thank the Dimos/Council of Kerkyra for funding some sterilisations of stray dogs but this will not solve the problem. There are so many stray animals we need to do a sterilisation project with visiting Greek or foreign vets. These projects are now happening all over Greece and Corfu needs to catch up with the rest of the country.

We have been offered funding for a project and we are happy to help fundraise money to equip the licensed premises that the Dimos/council provides.

The Greek Animal Welfare Law No: 4039/2012 Article 9, Section 11 quite clearly states that visiting/foreign vets are allowed providing they use licensed premises and complete the necessary paperwork in advance for approval.

Thank you in advance for your help and support with this – Please help us help the animals of Corfu.
