CORFU. Statement from the local political organization NODE and the response from Corfu Hospital Administrator Fivos Karkavitsas.

NODE statement

Cancer, especially in Corfu, is becoming a scourge and a major social phenomenon as it, unfortunately, affects a large section of the island’s population.

It has emerged that there has been a breakdown in the chemotherapy dialysis machine at Corfu General Hospital since last Thursday. As a result, patients cannot undergo chemotherapy.

What makes matters worse is the fact that the hospital administration has not provided any information about this serious problem which concerns the health of the island’s cancer patients.

‘Nea Dimokratia’ party – always concerned about social and health issues - requests the hospital administration to act immediately to repair the chemotherapy dialysis machine and update cancer patients on the situation.

Hotel Administration’s response

Concerning the Corfu NODE Press Release regarding the Chemotherapy Department at Corfu Hospital.

There was indeed a problem with the laminar flow machine for dialysis on the morning of Friday 8th June (not Thursday). On the same day the administration approved funds for its repair.

The company that services the equipment every year was called on the same day and was pressed by the hospital to make it an immediate priority.  So today, Wednesday 13th June – after just two working days - a technician is at the hospital to deal with the problem.

There were no problems for patients as during these two working days all of them were informed about the postponement of their treatment for a few days. If NODE requires any information then it should ask the hospital administration directly instead of causing panic amongst vulnerable social groups, which the Administration had already informed, as was its responsibility.
