CORFU. Proposed measures from the Friends of Agios Stefanos, Episkepsi Beach Group – Next step: the prosecutor

The letter of protest

To:
Corfu Mayor Konstantinos Nikoulouzos
Deputy Mayor for North Corfu Markos Prentoulis
Corfu MP Konstantinos Pavlidis
Corfu MP Fotini Vaki

We protest against and denounce the unprecedented and tragic condition of the Roda-Acharavi coastal road and Ag. Stefanos, Episkepsi beach.

We would like to present to you the problems of our everyday life which, above all, threaten the safety of residents and visitors as the road is used daily by a large number of people. Secondly, the survival and development of businesses on the coast is being directly threatened.

Lack of public lighting: For more that a decade, we have regularly had power supply problems. However, in the last two years, there has been damage due to the recently completed drainage system, posing a direct RISK OF ELECTROCUTION as there are many bare cables and a fallen pole. More than two other poles are also ready to fall.

During the summer, tourists are advised by travel agents to use torches for their own safety!

Road condition: There are several danger spots due to road subsidence.

Cleanliness: For over 8 months, a huge PILE OF RUBBISH has built up in front of the former Beis Beach Hotel next to the beach! The contamination of sea life is just a matter of time as in bad weather conditions the rubbish ends up in the sea.

There have been continuous complaints from tourists about the general condition of the beach even when they are staying in the centre of Acharavi and not by the beach. This often results in them moving to other areas with the property owners being charged for the difference in price.

It is unprecedented that a developing town like Acharavi, with one of the longest beaches in Corfu, be left to the mercy of God.

It is essential that we keep the beach and the environment clean.
It is our right and our children’s right to be able to live and work in a clean and decent environment.

Proposed measures

1. Public lighting: Repair to damages and installation of more poles where there is poor visibility.

2. Road condition: Repair works to the road network and ideally a long-term study for pedestrianization where necessary.

3. Cleanliness:
a. Immediate removal of refuse in front of Beis Beach Hotel.
b. Placement of litter bins.
c. Placement of signs telling visitors that it is prohibited to leave rubbish on the beach.
d. Make residents and café and restaurant owners aware of the necessity of recycling.

We await the immediate satisfaction of our demands and hope that we do not have to resort to other means.

If we do not see any response or action by 30th May 2018, this letter will be forwarded to the public prosecutor.

We attach the relevant photos

Yours Sincerely,
Friends of Agios Stefanos, Episkepsi Bech Group (Save the Beach)
