CORFU. The Ambassador will donate 20 silk costumes from his personal collection to the Corfu Museum of Asian Arts to add to its exhibits.

The Mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos, met with the Chinese Ambassador to Greece, Zou Xiaoli, at the Old Town Hall on Monday morning. “I am very happy to be in Corfu,” said the Ambassador, who is leaving Greece next month. “I couldn’t leave, however,” he added, “without visiting Corfu.”

Mr. Xiaoli told the Mayor that during his 4-year tenure in Greece he had taken an interest in the establishment of a Department of Asian Studies at the Ionian University. “We didn’t have the result that we wanted,” he said, “but I’m sure that the efforts will continue with the new Ambassador as it is something that we are very interested in.”

The Ambassador also told the Mayor that he is going to donate 20 silk costumes from his personal collection to the Corfu Museum of Asian Arts.

The Mayor told him that Corfu is a hospitable and multi-cultural society with its own individual culture and thanked him for the visit as well as the donation to the Museum of Asian Arts, pointing out that it was a unique museum and that it was important for it to expand its collections. He also informed the Ambassador of the relations of friendship and cooperation that Corfu has with Chinese towns such as Tajan, Ruzhou and Jinan.

Mr. Xiaoli invited the Mayor to the 1st International Exhibition of Imports and Exports that is going to take place in Shanghai in November this year, saying that Greek products should be promoted in China, and that Greek olive oil, especially, could do very well in the Chinese market.

He also talked about tourism and the potential that exists for attracting visitors to Greece and to Corfu, in particular. Finally, he told the Mayor of the interest that exists in China in the field of investment.

The Mayor thanked the Chinese Ambassador for his interest in Corfu and expressed his agreement on the prospects that China offers in the fields of tourism and trade. He wished him every success in his continuing career.
