CORFU. Corfu SYRIZA MP Fotini Vaki loudly denounced the police on a Corfu TV channel on Sunday night, saying that they had had information concerning the arson attack at Lefkimmi landfill.

According to the post on the Corfutvnews website, the MP said: "Apart from all the talk of what might have happened, we have a serious problem here. The Prosecutor needs to intervene and those responsible brought to account. The police knew about the petrol and gunpowder. I don't want to mention names, but they knew. Those responsible must be brought to account!"

Regional SYRIZA Committee statement:

The Regional SYRIZA Committee in Corfu categorically condemns the arson attack on 6th May at the Lefkimmi landfill facility which resulted in the complete destruction of two buildings and the facility's equipment as well as major damage to a third building.

We consider it not only to be an action which should be condemned but that it should be treated as a criminal offence. It is neither the first nor the only such incident - there have been several similar incidents in the past - but it is, however, the most serious and at a critical time for the island.

These kind of 'private justice' actions attempt to impose their own views by destroying public property and inflaming the critical waste management problem. They are holding the whole island hostage and doing serious damage to the democratic ideal.
