CORFU. The Mayor held a meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss the best possible way to start the tourist season, as regards refuse collection.
There is tremendous pressure on the local authority and the Cleansing Services regarding the collection of refuse. And the pressure is increased due to the official start of the tourist season this week., with most of the island's hotels opening.
For this reason, the Mayor held a meeting at his office with all the deputy mayors who are involved in order to tackle the problems created by the delays in staffing the Cleansing Services with the newly appointed personnel.
According to Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos, another 11 personnel are expected to join the Cleansing Services in the next few days and the private contractors are already collecting refuse - mainly in the areas outside the town, where most of it has piled up. Mr Nikolouzos believes that the situation will be back to normal within the next 2 - 3 days at the most.
