CORFU. The fire broke out at 18:00 on Tuesday at the waste dumping area outside the entrance to the town΄s treatment facility.
Piles of refuse and larger objects - mattresses etc. - had collected there, but it is not yet known how the fire broke out.
Three fire engines and seven fire fighters immediately rushed to the spot and set about extinguishing the fire, with the aid of bulldozers and Municipality water tankers, to prevent it from spreading.
Fortunately, the fire hadn't covered a large area and even though it is almost impossible to completely extinguish burning rubbish, the fire fighters managed to contain it.
Fire also broke out at the facility in the summer of 2016 when the Temploni landfill was closed off for over a month.
