CORFU. The Corfu Mountain Trail takes place this weekend - April 14 & 15.

The Corfu Mountain Trail is now in its 7th year and attracts runners not only from Greece but also from abroad.

With six years experience, the races are now recognized as an important event in the running calendar with its beguiling race routes through Corfu town and countryside and now attracts acclaimed international long-distance runners.

The 'soul' of the event is Vassilis Alamanos - himself a long-distance runner - who believes that this year there will be a record number of participants with runners from 25 countries, including America, Australia, Russia, Canada, Turkey and Spain.

Over 500 runners

The total number of participants will be over 500 as the event includes 4 routes: 8km (Quick Trail), 20km (Olive Tree Trail), 40km (Rain Trail) and 104km (Night & Day Trail). There will also be children's races and Special Olympics races, which are open to the public and free of charge.

The 2-day event will be covered by the main Greek and international media from America, South Africa, UK, Sweden, Spain, France, Italy and other countries.

The main sponsor is the Messonghi Beach Hotel which is accommodating the journalists and 'elite' runners.

The organizers have secured a 50% discount on ferry tickets from Igoumenitsa port for runners and their companions coming to Corfu by their own means.

'Night & Day' Route the main attraction

The 'flagship' event is the 104km Night & Day Trail, which has attracted the 'elite' runners. Bearing in mind that the longest distance between any two points on the island is 65km, this route is especially enthralling for the runners. It covers the whole of the island both along the coast and in the hills and begins at 7pm on Saturday evening. The night run provides a unique experience for the runners as well as impressive shots for cameras.

The event is, of course, supported throughout by volunteers, local organizations and medical and rescue teams such as the Greek Red Cross, Corfu Search and Rescue Unit (EMED) and the Hellenic Rescue Team (EOD).

The run starts from Ipsos village on the east coast, climbs to the highest point of the island - Mt. Pantokrator (914m) - and then passes through traditional villages in the north, such as Old Perithia, Petalia, Perithia, Klimatia, Lakones and Palaiokastritsa. From there it goes along the west coast close to the beaches of Liapades, Myrtiotissa, Glyfada and Kontogialou along trails with stunning views of the Adriatic before climbing up to the mountain village of Agii Deka and ending at Messonghi village in south Corfu on Sunday.
