Corfu Easter: Resurrection - ΄Christ is Risen!΄

Corfu Easter
08 Apr 2018 / 06:25

CORFU. Night became day as the midnight sky was lit up by fireworks celebrating the Resurrection.

At 10pm the Holy Fire from the Holy Sepulchre was received at Pentofanaro (Liston) in the presence of local dignitaries. The Holy Fire was taken to the Church of Saint Paraskevi and Archbishop Nektarios then led the Devotional for the Lord's Resurrection.

At 11pm the Devotional Vigil for the Resurrection commenced at the Church of Saint Paraskevi, near the Upper Square - the largest in the Balkans - in a solemn atmosphere brightly-lit by thousands of candles.

At 11:40 the procession, led by the Archbishop of Corfu Nektarios, set out from the Church of Saint Paraskevi towards the stage in the Upper Square where the Resurrection was celebrated, ‘Christos Anesti’ (Christ is Risen) was chanted and the three Philharmonic Bands played in a spectacular atmosphere.

There were also Resurrection services in the following churches in town: All Saints, Virgin Mary ton Xenon, Saint Iasonas and Sosipatros, Three Holy Martyrs, Dormition of Holy Mary belonging to the Mamalos family, Saint Constantine and Helen (Koulines) and the following monasteries: Platyteras, Saint Efthimia, Kassopitras (Kanoni) and Saint Theodoros (Stratia).

It was, of course, also celebrated in villages throughout the island.
