CORFU. "Huge ΄botides΄ (Easter pots) with advertisements are in poor taste and have nothing to do with the spirit of Corfu Easter," says Kostas Nikolouzos.

The Mayor of Corfu, Kostas Nikolouzos, had the following to say regarding the excesses observed in the last few years during Easter celebrations:

"Throwing the 'botides' at the First Resurrection on the morning of Easter Saturday is one of the customs which have made the Corfu Easter unique.

The excesses of a few peoplein an effort to impress has, unfortunately,  risked debasing the custom. The huge pots with advertising or other messages on them are in bad taste and have nothing to do with the spirit of Corfu Easter, which is a key part of our cultural identity.

I would like to ask for moderation and that excesses be avoided in order to maintain the splendour of the celebration. Whoever tries to create an impression with the excesses I mentioned above is only doing a disservice to the image of the island and is damaging the good name of the unique Corfu Easter celebrations."
