Approval given at meeting of the Central Archaeological Council on Holy Tuesday.

The Council discussed the study for the restoration of the Annunciata bell tower in Corfu Old Town and not only approved it, but also commended the study, which was drawn up by the Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-byzantine Monuments.

The next step is for the project to be put out to tender. The work is now expected to be completed in one stage and not two as originally planned.

At the Development Conference in Corfu last December, the Minister for Culture, Lydia Koniordou, stated, "The Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-byzantine Monuments has undertaken the restoration study. The complete project will be put out to tender and must cause as little nuisance as possible in the town."

According to the Ministry of Culture, once the contract has been signed the work is expected to be completed within 12 months.
