Stefanos Poulimenos: "Kastellani Mesi pupils are still attending classes in containers!"
CORFU. "ESPA funds remain unused and have been lost."
(Stefanos Poulimenos) Mayoral candidate Stefanos Poulimenos had the opportunity to observe the problems at Kastellani Mesi Primary and High Schools at first hand on Wednesday 21 June, accompanied by other members and candidates of his Exarhis party.
The principals and teacehers at the two schools described the conditions under which they operate, particularly emphasising the inadequacy of their buildings. for years now, this has led to the housing of some of their classes in containers, which is not the only building issue they face.
It was mutually acknowledged that in both cases, preparation (studies, approvals, permits, etc.) for including building projects in the new ESPA funding programme is necessary, as the current programme is already nearing its end.
In both cases at Kastellani, as well as at the school in Alepou, a complete financial programme with millions of Euros in funding has been wasted, and moreover, without any preparation for the future.
This is a painful fact that, unfortunately, is not unique, and is confirmed by the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, which responded, when questioned, by stating: No proposal (with its dossier) for the construction of a new school building has been submitted to the regional ESPA programme, which ends at the end of the year.
Stefanos Poulimenos was accompanied at the two Kastellani schools by his associates, civil engineers Andreas Kardonas and Stamatis Mallios, educator Stelios Himariotis, Gina Bougioukou and Christina Kefaloniti. Local Kastellani Councillor, Spyros Koskinas, was also present.
