CORFU. The transfer of the land which was once the site of Club Med in Dassia to a company belonging to Ivan Savvides (Russian heritage) is now in its final stages.

According to well-informed sources, the matter has reached the stage of checking documentation – in other words just prior to the signing of the transfer contract. There has long been talk of Savvides’ interest in purchasing land or hotel units, another confirmation of increasing Russian interest in the island. In this particular case the land may be changing hands but the ‘flag’ won’t be changing as the present owners are also Russian.

Who are the present owners?

They first became known in Corfu when they expressed an interest in the Metropolitan Conference Centre with a view to converting it into a multi-purpose centre which would also host international artistic events. Their interest however, became entangled in the ‘conference centre’ labyrinthine legal saga and was eventually withdrawn. With the acquisition now of the land once belonging to Club Med a new chapter is opening in Russian investment in the island.

Daskalantonakis

Apart from the Ikos investment in the ex-Chandris property, the investment in the Gelina (Harlaftis) in Acharavi was expedited this weekend. The hotel unit now belongs to the Daskalantonakis Group. The completion of the deal brought an end to employees’ insecurity which was recently expressed in an announcement from the hotel employees union.

Not opening

The Russian-owned hotel in Almyros, according to the same sources, will not be ready in time to open this year. The others will open in the first week of May. According to reliable hotel sources, this year’s early Easter will limit the availability of beds mainly – if not exclusively – to Corfu Town and the surrounding area.

New leadership

Today is a historic day for Corfu hoteliers as it is anticipated that, with the consensus of the various representatives, there will be a change in the leadership of the Hoteliers Union.  If the information that Enimerosi has received is confirmed, the ‘permanent’ President over several terms, Mr. Bramos, will be replaced by the hopeful candidate, Mr. Voulgaris, in the elections taking place today.
