CORFU. Foodstuffs and basic necessities for children and families in Greece that are living at poverty level or threatened with poverty.

The Smile of the Child, on behalf of thousands of children and their families in Greece who are living at poverty level, is appealing to all individuals and organizations to support its collection of necessary foodstuffs and basic necessities.

In spite of the difficulties, The Smile of the Child has been able to continue its work and with Easter coming would like to ask everyone to support this initiative, bearing in mind that the number of families who can’t even cover their basic needs is increasing dramatically.

Nevertheless, thanks to similar campaigns and to people’s tremendous response, in 2017 The Smile of the Child was able to support 17,731 children and their families who are living at poverty level throughout Greece. 74.3% of these families had parents who were unemployed or in insecure work.

The items being collected are everyday necessities for children. They are stored and distributed directly by the specialised team of The Smile of the Child. Our inviolable rule in this as in all other instances is to assure the dignity of each child and to ensure complete transparency in the whole process of collection and distribution. As part of its work in caring for children and their families, The Smile of the Child set up the Support Centre for Children and Families in 1997 to offer support services to a large number of families with under-age children who were facing serious living problems.

The main aim of the Support Centre is to relieve the families of problems that can be resolved with the help of The Smile of the Child (living problems, dealing with welfare services etc.). It also aims to motivate the family members so as to maintain the family nucleus and prevent the crisis from escalating and having a negative effect on the children. There is a holistic approach to dysfunctional families in order to strengthen them and, where possible, to restore their ability to deal positively with everyday needs and situations on their own as well as to provide a safe environment for the children.
