CORFU. Catch up on what happened in Corfu this week.
Once again rubbish dominates local news. The Temploni Cultural Society called another public meeting with residents and all parties affected by the issue of the landfill there. The day before the meeting, another organization – Central Corfu Residents Action Committee – was said to have occupied the facility, though the mayor in fact denied it and said that work was carrying on as normal. The mayor and a representative committee have now arranged to meet with the Minister of the Interior on Wednesday to discuss the matter of removing waste from Corfu for the interim period.
And of course, along with rubbish, the other perennial problem is the condition of the roads. A group of exasperated residents adopted a form of protest that has been becoming popular worldwide – planting flowers in potholes! This Sunday they planted flowers in potholes in and around San Rocco Square to highlight and protest against the condition of the roads on the island. We can see another example here on the road to Palaiokastritsa Monastery, which is more serious – a rather large fissure is developing.
Still on the subject of roads, but on a positive note. The so-called Blue Route, a motorway to connect the North Adriatic with the South Ionian, was publicly announced and construction is underway. Other forms of transport were also in the news – Fraport announced the changes it is making to improve Corfu Airport and EasyJet are adding yet another flight route to Corfu, with weekly flights to and from Venice. Another ferry service was added to the Corfu-Igoumenitsa route at 21:00 so that passengers no longer have to wait for four hours.
The Corfu trial of the Igoumenitsa fireman accused of murder concluded this week and those of you passing along the seafront road at Garitsa – drivers and pedestrians – will have to put up with some diversions whilst work is going on in the area.
