CORFU. The Corfu mayor, Kostas Nikolouzos, represented the Ionian Islands Region at the inter-regional meeting that took place in Moscow on 24th and 25th January as part of the Year of Tourism Greece – Russia (October ’17 – October ’18).
There were representatives from the 30 richest regions in Russia and 9 Greek regions at the meeting.
The mayor presented the general characteristics and comparative advantages of tourism in the Ionian Islands, highlighting the ‘sun and sea’, cultural and religious tourism models. Corfu is the most important destination in the Ionian Islands for Russian tourists. The Russian representatives also presented their regions to the Greek regional representatives.
There was considerable interest on the part of the Russians in further developing mutually beneficial relationships in the field of tourism and it was generally agreed – once again – that there are strong elements uniting the two countries, such as the Orthodox Church and the iconic figures of Capodistrias and Ushakov.
The next meeting of the regional representatives from Greece and Russia in the Year of Tourism will take place in Greece this coming June.
